Call for Papers for Special Issue on Tunneling Risk Assessment Case Histories
The TC 304 on Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), through its International Journal of Geoengineering Case Histories (IJGCH), invites submissions for a Special Issue on "Case Histories in Tunneling Risk Assessment"
Well-documented case histories with detailed site characterization data and monitoring data to assess field performance are particularly welcome.
Scope of the Special Issue
Case histories may relate to:
- Data-driven characterization and updating of geological conditions, ground properties, and associated uncertainties to support tunneling risk assessment;
- Integration and analysis of multi-source data from geological investigations, geophysical surveys, laboratory and in situ tests, tunneling operations, and field monitoring for risk identification and assessment;
- Analysis of shield and TBM operational data to detect hazardous conditions and support risk-informed adjustment of excavation, face support, and grouting parameters;
- Data-informed assessment of risks associated with ground deformation, surface settlement, and tunnel structural response, including potential damage to adjacent buildings, utilities, and transport infrastructure;
- Prediction and early warning of tunnel face instability, collapse, and water or mud inrush using site and monitoring data, with consideration of event likelihood, potential consequences, and appropriate response measures;
- Integration of field monitoring, Bayesian updating, back-analysis, data assimilation, and physics-based models to update tunneling risk assessments and guide construction decisions;
- Applications of computer vision, point-cloud analysis, and digital twins to tunnel condition assessment, defect detection, and risk-informed inspection, maintenance, and intervention.
Submission Details
Interested authors are encouraged to submit a 300-word abstract by 30 November 2026 to Prof Wengang ZHANG [email protected], and Dr Weixin Sun [email protected].
Authors will be notified of abstract acceptance shortly thereafter. Full manuscripts should be submitted by 31 March 2027. Publication of this special issue is expected in June 2027.
