Abstract

Surface geology and rock strength properties are discussed for the lower 50 km of the Brisbane River through a snapshot of cross sections along the river. The Brisbane River is tidal with a varied geological history which can be traced to the Triassic Period. River width and depth to bed level are compared as the river snakes through Brisbane City with a large drainage catchment. Statistical properties and correlations of some of the various rock units uncover the range and variability along the river, providing a basis for engineering design decisions and the assessment of project risk. Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) to Point Load Index (Is(50)) and UCS to tangent modulus (E) correlations are developed.
